The story, "The Adventures of Toto" by Ruskin Bond is all about a baby monkey who is bought by the grandfather of the writer but after few days is sold again because of his mysterious activities. The grandfather bought him from a tonga driver for the sum of rupees 5/- after noticing him being tied to a feeding trough. The monkey had bright eyes pearly white teeth, dried up but quick fingers  and a tail as his third hand. At first the presence of Toto was kept secret from the grandmother as she didn't like the entry of any birds or animals in her house but further finding her in a good mood she was informed about Toto by the grandfather. At first Toto was kept in a little closet but he, just after sometime, made himself free. Then after Toto was shifted to a  big cage with a tortoise,  pair of rabbits, a squirrel and a pet goat, but at night the monkey did not allow anyone to sleep. That's why when the next day the grandfather had to leave for Saharanpur to collect his pension, he took Toto with him. During journey,  the grandfather kept Toto in a black Canvas kit bag which was so strong and the Monkey couldn't harm it. When the ticket collector noticed Toto, he charged Rupees 3/- as his ticket and the grandfather became so angry for that. After returning from there,  grandfather provided Toto a comfortable place in the  stable with a donkey, Nana. While inquiring their situation at night, the grandfather found that both were trying to upset each other. So grandfather separated them.  Grandmother, everyday,  provided warm water to Toto for his bath and, he entered gradually into the bathtub and started bathing till the water became cold. One day Toto entered a large kitchen kettlethat was on the fire for boiling the water. It was so cold outside so he continued to be in the kettle. When the water almost half boiled, grandmother suddenly came and lifted him out of that. Toto used to do so many mischievous activities every time. One day when there was a large dish of pulao on the dining table, he began  to eat that and when opposed by grandmother and one of the aunts, he began to throw plates and glasses on them. Finally, he ran towards the branch of a tree in the garden and threw the dish down. He alsoo used to tear the curtains and dresses as well. The grandfather realised that he would not be able to afford the losses of these materials. So, finally he sold the monkey back to the person from where he had bought him.

Q.1 Do you have a pet? Is your pet mischievous? Tell the class about it.

Answer:

Yes, I have a pet dog named Jimmy. My father had brought him to my mother's uncle house when he was very young. Jimmy is like a member of my family. I cling to him in particular. He is diligent and alert. He is an example of honesty. He ends up sitting next to the big gate at night. If there is an unknown noise inside my house, he starts barking.  Jimmy proves that he is really precious most of the time. He keeps us safe at all times. He is sensible and empathetic too. We feel safe in his presence.
