Summary:-

The story is told from the perspective of Franz, a young boy from France who prefers playing over studying and does not enjoy learning French or attending the classes of his teacher, M. Hamel.

After Germany took control of the Alsace and Lorraine regions, it was declared that German would replace French as the language of instruction in schools.

On the day the story takes place, Franz finds out that it will be M. Hamel’s final day as their French teacher, as he has been teaching in the village for forty years. M. Hamel is filled with sorrow and a deep sense of patriotism, and the villagers come to attend his last class to pay tribute to his dedication.

Franz feels regretful that he never took the opportunity to learn his own language properly. Now, knowing it is his final French lesson, he suddenly feels a strong desire to learn, and everything M. Hamel teaches that day becomes clear to him.

For the first time, Franz begins to appreciate M. Hamel’s honesty and dedication, developing respect for him. However, he feels ashamed of himself when he is unable to read the lesson in front of the others.

During the class, M. Hamel explains that many people always put off learning for another day, and he also blames himself for not teaching with complete seriousness in the past.

His deep love for his country becomes clear as he speaks of the beauty and clarity of the French language, calling it the most logical language in the world.
