SUMMARY:

The chapter, “From the diary of Anne Frank” is an extract of one of the best selling books “The Diary of a Young Girl” written by a 13 years old girl Anne Frank. She wrote this when there was the rule of Hitler in Germany during the second world war. She started writing in her diary when the diary was presented to her on her birthday by her father. Before writing the very first word, she was so nervous as she had not written anything like this before. The other reason for her nervousness was that she was not sure whether in future, anyone would read her diary or not. She wanted to write in her diary because she did not have any one with whom she could share her feelings. It was right that she had her father, mother, one elder sister, grandmother and many of her friends in her life, but she couldn’t share her personal feelings with any of them. That was why she decided to make her diary as her friend and named it Kitty. At first, she explained about her family members in it and then she wrote that when she was at the age of six, she had a good relationship with her teachers as well as the head-mistress, Mrs. Kuperus .She wrote that in the summer of 1941, her grandmother fell ill and had an operation. But she died in January 1942. That was why, that year, Anne had her birthday celebration with the sorrow of the departure of her grandmother.

On 20th June, she was writing in her diary about her classroom where all the students were afraid of the decisions of the teachers about which student would be promoted for the next class. They all were in chaos and most of them were betting whoever would be passed or not . Then, Anne wrote that in her school, she had good impression of her in front of all the teachers except one who taught them Maths and his name was Mr. Keesing. He used to scold her every time as she was so talkative. Once when she was talking in the class, he gave her extra homework to write an essay on the topic ‘a chatterbox’. She thought a lot on the topic and finally wrote that her mother was also so talkative and how one can get rid of herited traits. The essay was so amusing but again she was caught talking in the class and was punished to write an essay on ‘an incorrigible chatterbox’. She again completed her homework and again was caught and punished to write an essay entitled, “Quack- Quack- Quack said mistress chatterbox” . This time she wrote one story of a mother duck and a father swan with three baby ducklings who were killed by their father as they were so talkative. This story became a fun among not only the class but also among the school as that teacher began to tell that story in front of all, adding his own comments. This story changed that teacher and he left to scold any student for talking.
