Summary:-

The story 'The hack Driver' by Sinclair Lewis is all about a junior assistant clerk who was a graduate with honours but couldn't become a lawyer. His work was to serve summons. He was not satisfied with his work because often he had to go to dirty and shadowy corners of the city to seek out his victims and some of the larger and more self confident ones even beat him up. One day he was given a work to serve summons on a man Oliver lutkins in a town called New mullion. Reaching there he found that the place was a river of mud. He met a hack driver there in the station whose name was Bill and asked him about Lutkins. He replied that Lutkins was just here an hour ago. Bill got ready to help him to find Oliver in his carriage and he charged him two dollars per hour. Bill told him that he knew where Oliver might be. He took him to the back of fritz's shop where he might have played a poker game. Bill convinced the narrator that if he would go to enquiry about Oliver, he might get careful as the narrator was in a very good dress. So Bill entered the poker game and asked about Oliver but responded that he just left that place. Then after he took the narrator to the shop of a barber and when Bill asked about Oliver, he responded that he just left five minutes ago. After that he took the narrator to the pool room and after enquiry got to know that Oliver was here, but he had bought a pack of cigarettes and gone out. At the time of lunch, Bill forbade the narrator to go to any restaurant and brought the food for him from his own house and charged him half a dollar.. Finally he took the narrator to the house of Lutkins where the mother of Lutkins was there and when they asked her to let them search her home, she started beating both of them. Finally it was evening and the narrator had to return to his hometown. In the firm, when he was informed that he couldn't find Lutkins, the next day he was again sent to the town with a man who had worked with Lutkins. When they reached the station, they found that Bill, with his mother was standing in the station and then the narrator got to know that Bill himself was Oliver Lutkins with whom the narrator had spent the whole day.
