Summary:-

     The chapter, “Long Walk To Freedom” by Nelson Mandela is about the day when in the history of south Africa the very 1st black president was taking the oath for his post and delivering the speech about the past struggles and the future predictions. It was the day of inauguration where the time was witnessing the largest gathering of many international leaders in the south Africa’s soil. Mr. Nelson Mandela was there with his daughter Zenani and after the two deputy President sworn in, he pledged to upward the constitution and to devote himself for the sake of the country. During his speech he declared that whatever the circumstance there had been before this democratic election, in future there will not be the oppression of one by one. The moment of inauguration was made as much glorious as possible. After even centuries, in the sandstone amphitheatre, any black person sworn in. As the president Nelson mandela said that jets were releasing the smoke of the black, red, green, blue and gold of the new south African Flag, he was noticing the highest generals of the country saluting him who just earlier had arrested him before this democratic election. He was in grief as the revolutionaries who had sacrificed their lives are not present today to witness this heavenly moment. He was also missing his colleagues who struggled with him, who were oppressed but are now not present to feel the proud of this democratic freedom. Finally he said that in future, there will be creation of real humanity, where the country will witness the affection for each other and there will be no  exploitation of one by another. He wished  the freedom should reign and god bless their country.

I agree with the statement that the depth of oppression creates the height of the characters. Nelson Mandela illustrates this by giving examples of great South African heroes such as Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu and others who were inspired to give their lives in the long struggle for freedom.

        India is full of examples like this, during the liberation struggle there was a galaxy of great character leaders and the oppression of the British empire created and encouraged famous characters like Mahatma Gandhi, Lala Lajpat Rai, JL Nehru, Chandra Shekhar Ajad, Sardar Bhagat Singh and many more. If we compare them to the quality of India's political leaders they have today, then Nelson Mandela seems very right.


Q.4. How did Mandela's understanding of freedom change with age and experience ?


Answer:


With age and experience, Mandela understood the meaning of true freedom. As a young boy, he thought he was born free and believed that as long as he obeyed his father and kept the traditions of his nation, he was free in every way. As he grew older, he began to have the freedom to raise a family and to earn a living. Gradually, she realized that she was selfish when she was a boy. He gradually understood that it was not just his freedom that was curtailed, but the freedom of all blacks. It was freedom from fear and prejudice. Age and experience expanded his vision of freedom.



 

Q. 5.How did Mandela's hunger for freedom change his life ?


Answer:


Mandela saw in his youth that not only his freedom was being curtailed, but the freedom of all blacks. This turned a terrified man into a fearless rebel.

He sacrificed his comfortable family life in order to pursue a higher purpose. He joined the African National Congress and this changed him into a frightened young man who became brave and fought against racism.
