Summary:-

The chapter 'The last leaf' by O Henry is about two friends Sue and Johnsy who were young artists and shared a small flat on the third floor of an old house. One day in November Johnsy fell seriously ill, she had pneumonia. Every time she used to lie on her bed and gaze out of the window. The doctor came everyday to her but there was no relief in her situation. After a few days, the doctor said to Sue that perhaps johnsy didn't have a desire to get well. Sue tried her best for johnsy so that she could take interest in the things around her, but johnsy never responded. Sue started painting in the room of johnsy so as to receive her attention but she noticed that Johnsy was looking out of the window continuously. She was counting and was whispering the numbers. Sue noticed an old ivy creeper that was climbing on the brick wall and the leaves of that creeper were falling continuously. Johnsy said that there were only five left now and when the last leaf will fall, I shall die. Sue told her that this was nonsense and brought soup in a ball for her. Sue told Johnsy that she would not die and requested her to let her draw a painting of an old miner. Sue also said that she would need the help of Behrman for that. Sue went to Behrman and told something to him and then returned. Behrman was a very fine painter and held a desire to paint a Masterpiece. After listening to everything about Johnsy, he thought and decided something.The whole day Johnsy was waiting for the last leaf to fall but it didn't. Finally, she left her wish to die as the last leaf didn't fall even in the heavy storm and rain. Next morning they got the news that Behrman died of pneumonia. Sue told Johnsy that a ladder, some brushes, Paints and a Lantern had been found with the dead body of Behrman near his bed. Actually Behrman had been painting the leaf the whole night during heavy rain and the storm after the last leaf fell. And the single leaf that Johnsy was gazing continuously and was waiting for that to fall, was actually not original but the masterpiece painting of Behrman that he painted last night.
