“My Mother at Sixty-Six,” written by Kamala Das, is a short emotional poem about a daughter’s fear of losing her aging mother.

The poet is on her way to the airport with her mother. While sitting beside her, she looks at her mother’s face and suddenly notices how old and weak she has become. Her mother’s pale face reminds her of a dead body, which fills the poet with sadness and worry.

To distract herself from these painful thoughts, she looks outside the car window. She sees young trees moving and children running and playing—symbols of energy, youth, and life, which contrast with her mother’s tired and aging body.

At the airport gate, the poet looks at her mother again. She feels the same fear of losing her one day, a fear she has felt since childhood. But instead of showing her worry, she gives her mother a smile, hiding her emotions. She waves goodbye with hope, even though her heart is heavy.
