The Rattrap Summary (in hindi and english), English Class 12

(FLAMINGO: ENGLISH, CLASS 12)

The Rattrap” is a story about a poor man who sells rattrap. He is lonely and thinks that the whole world is like a big rattrap. According to him, the world tempts people with joys and comforts just like a rattrap offers bait. But once someone gets caught in this trap, it becomes impossible to escape.

The peddler (rattrap seller) has no home or money. One day, he takes shelter at the house of an old crofter (a farmer who lives alone). The crofter is very kind to him. He gives him food, talks to him, and even shows him the thirty kronor (money) he earned. But the next day, the peddler steals the money and runs away. Soon he gets lost in the forest and starts thinking that he has fallen into the world's rattrap because of the stolen money.

Finally, he reaches the iron mill of Ramsjö. The master is not there, but the ironmaster mistakes him for his old friend and invites him home. The peddler refuses, but later the ironmaster’s daughter, Edla, kindly brings him home. She treats him nicely, gives him food, clothes, and a peaceful place to rest.

The next day, the ironmaster realizes that the peddler is not his old friend and becomes angry. But Edla still treats him with respect and kindness. Her goodness changes the peddler’s heart. Instead of running away with more stolen things, he leaves behind the stolen money and a note. In the note, he thanks Edla for her kindness and says that she helped him escape the world’s rattrap. He also leaves a rattrap as a gift for her.

In the end, the peddler transforms into a good human being because of Edla’s kindness.
