The story is about Charley, a 31-year-old man who lives in New York. He often feels stressed because of the worries and problems of modern life. One day, while trying to find his way home through Grand Central Station, he discovers something strange—the third level of the station.

Actually, Grand Central Station has only two levels, but Charley finds a mysterious third level. Everything there looks different from the modern world. People are wearing old-fashioned clothes, and the surroundings look like they belong to the 1890s.

Charley goes to the ticket counter and asks for two tickets to Galesburg, Illinois, for himself and his wife, Louisa. He wants to escape from the problems of modern life and live peacefully in the past. However, when he tries to pay for the tickets with modern currency, the clerk becomes suspicious. Charley runs away.

Later, Charley tells Louisa about the third level, but she believes that he imagined it because of stress. His friend Sam, a psychiatrist, also thinks that the third level is only a result of Charley's desire to escape from reality.

One day, Charley finds a letter from Sam. The letter is dated 1894, even though Sam had disappeared. In the letter, Sam says that he has found the third level and has settled in Galesburg. He encourages Charley and Louisa to come there because life is peaceful and free from the worries of the modern world.

The story ends mysteriously. It is not clear whether the third level really exists or whether it is only a product of Charley's imagination.

चार्ली टिकट खिड़की पर जाकर अपनी पत्नी लुइसा और अपने लिए गेल्सबर्ग, इलिनॉय जाने के दो टिकट माँगता है। वह आधुनिक जीवन की परेशानियों से दूर जाकर शांतिपूर्ण जीवन जीना चाहता है। लेकिन जब वह आधुनिक समय के पैसे से टिकट खरीदने की कोशिश करता है, तो टिकट क्लर्क को शक हो जाता है। चार्ली वहाँ से भाग जाता है।

चार्ली जब यह घटना लुइसा को बताता है, तो वह मानती है कि तनाव के कारण चार्ली ने यह सब कल्पना कर लिया है। चार्ली का दोस्त सैम, जो एक मनोचिकित्सक है, भी यही मानता है कि तीसरा स्तर वास्तव में मौजूद नहीं है और यह चार्ली की वास्तविकता से बचने की इच्छा का परिणाम है।

कुछ समय बाद चार्ली को सैम का एक पत्र मिलता है। हैरानी की बात यह है कि पत्र पर 1894 की तारीख होती है। सैम पत्र में बताता है कि उसने भी तीसरा स्तर खोज लिया है और वह गेल्सबर्ग पहुँचकर वहीं रहने लगा है। वह चार्ली और लुइसा को भी वहाँ आने के लिए कहता है, क्योंकि वहाँ का जीवन शांतिपूर्ण और चिंताओं से मुक्त है।

कहानी का अंत रहस्यमय है। यह स्पष्ट नहीं होता कि तीसरा स्तर वास्तव में मौजूद था या केवल चार्ली की कल्पना थी।
