“The Enemy” is a story written by Pearl S. Buck. It presents a difficult moral situation faced by Dr. Sadao Hoki, a Japanese doctor, during the time of war. The story shows that humanity and professional duty can sometimes become more important than hatred between two enemy countries.

Dr. Sadao Hoki is a talented Japanese surgeon who has studied medicine in America. After completing his education, he returns to Japan and lives with his wife, Hana, in a house near the sea. Since he is an important doctor, he is not sent to the battlefield and continues his medical work at home.

One evening, Dr. Sadao and Hana see a wounded man lying near the seashore. When they examine him, they discover that he is an American prisoner of war. His name is Tom. As Japan and America are enemies during the war, helping him could put Sadao and his family in serious trouble.

Sadao initially thinks that the American should be handed over to the authorities. However, as a doctor, he cannot allow a badly wounded person to die without treatment. He decides to operate on the man and remove the bullet from his body. Hana helps him during the operation even though she is afraid and uncomfortable.

Sadao successfully saves Tom's life. After the operation, Tom slowly becomes healthy. Sadao knows that keeping an enemy soldier in his house is dangerous. His servants also refuse to stay because they do not want to help an American enemy. Eventually, they leave the house.

Sadao informs the General about Tom. The General promises to send his private assassins to kill Tom secretly. However, the General keeps delaying the plan because he is more concerned about his own health and forgets to send them.

Sadao realizes that Tom cannot remain hidden in his house forever. He finally decides to help him escape. He gives Tom a boat and tells him to row towards a nearby island. He also gives him food and other necessary things and advises him to signal from the island if he needs help.

After some time, Sadao sees that there is no signal from the island. He understands that Tom has successfully escaped. Sadao feels relieved because he has saved a human life without directly betraying his country.

The story highlights the conflict between patriotism and humanity. Although Tom is an enemy soldier, Sadao cannot forget his duty as a doctor. Through Sadao's actions, the writer gives the message that compassion, humanity and professional responsibility can rise above the hatred created by war.

Overall, “The Enemy” shows that war divides people into enemies and friends, but human feelings can bring them together. Dr. Sadao's decision to save Tom proves that humanity has no boundaries of nationality.

शुरुआत में सादाओ सोचते हैं कि उस अमेरिकी सैनिक को अधिकारियों के हवाले कर देना चाहिए। लेकिन एक डॉक्टर होने के नाते वे किसी गंभीर रूप से घायल व्यक्ति को बिना इलाज के मरने नहीं दे सकते। इसलिए वे अपने डॉक्टर होने के कर्तव्य को प्राथमिकता देते हैं और टॉम का ऑपरेशन करने का निर्णय लेते हैं। हाना भी डर और परेशानी के बावजूद उनकी सहायता करती है।

सादाओ सफलतापूर्वक टॉम के शरीर से गोली निकाल देते हैं और उसकी जान बचा लेते हैं। ऑपरेशन के बाद टॉम धीरे-धीरे स्वस्थ होने लगता है। लेकिन सादाओ जानते हैं कि एक दुश्मन सैनिक को अपने घर में छिपाकर रखना बहुत खतरनाक है। उनके नौकर भी अमेरिकी सैनिक की सेवा करने से मना कर देते हैं और घर छोड़कर चले जाते हैं।

सादाओ अंततः जापानी सेना के जनरल को टॉम के बारे में बता देते हैं। जनरल सादाओ से वादा करता है कि वह अपने निजी हत्यारों को भेजकर टॉम को गुप्त रूप से मरवा देगा। लेकिन जनरल अपनी बीमारी और निजी समस्याओं में इतना व्यस्त रहता है कि वह अपने हत्यारों को भेजना ही भूल जाता है।

सादाओ समझ जाते हैं कि टॉम को हमेशा अपने घर में छिपाकर नहीं रखा जा सकता। इसलिए वे उसकी मदद करके उसे सुरक्षित रूप से भागने का रास्ता देते हैं। वे टॉम को एक नाव देते हैं और उसे पास के एक द्वीप की ओर जाने को कहते हैं। वे उसे भोजन और अन्य आवश्यक सामान भी देते हैं। सादाओ उसे निर्देश देते हैं कि यदि उसे किसी मदद की आवश्यकता हो तो वह द्वीप से संकेत दे।
