Summary:-

The chapter 'Madam rides the bus' by Vallikkannan is all about an 8 years old girl whose favourite time pass was to stand in front of the door way of her house and to watch the happenings in the street outside. Specially, she used to see the bus travelling between her village and the nearest town. She didn't have children of her age in that place, so she continued this habit and gradually an unwanted desire came to her mind. That was to ride a bus. This was converted into such an extent that she began to be jealous of the stories told by anyone about to ride in a bus. She began to prepare for a ride and for this, she collected all the statistics as the distance from her village to the town was 6 miles, the fare was 30 paise one way and the time taken by the bus was 45 minutes to reach the town. She arranged 60 paise by sacrificing her will to have toys and chocolates. She decided the time was 1 O' cloock to 4 O' clock when her mother had to have some rest after lunch. She shouted to stop the bus but when the conductor saw her as a lonely child, he asked her about any elder with her and she replied just by showing the money she had. After getting in the bus she had her seat and paid the money to the conductor as her fare. During the journey whenever the conductor asked anything from the girl she replied very strictly and she began to take a look at the scenery outside. On the way once an older man and once the older woman came beside her and asked her accordingly whether she was alone. And every time she replied in very strict terms that she had paid her fare and still didn't need anyone to be with her. Many times she stood on the seat to look outside clearly but when the crowd came to the bus, she said properly in fear of losing her seat. She also saw a cow running very fast in the middle of the road and the bus slowed down and horned loudly. Finally passing through the street of the town, all the passengers except only her got down. The conductor tried to convince her to get down for a while to have some snacks even at his expense but every time she only denied and again paid her fate to return back. After some time the bus was started and she again began to look outside through the window. But on the way she saw the same cow lying in the middle of the road but dead and full of blood. From that time Vallii didn't get interested in watching anything outside but sat without any moment. She was very sad after watching the dead cow. After reaching her village, she got down from the bus and moved to her home back. She even got involved in the discussion of her mother and her aunt about anything may happen with or around us that we don't expect.
