Summary:-

The chapter 'Packing' is an extract of 'Three Men in a Boat' written by Jerome K Jerome, in which a very ridiculous situation of packing before a journey has been mentioned. The author, at first, tells his two other friends that he would do the work of packing. In fact he felt so proud of his design of packing but at that time his intention was to become the instructor for the packing work and his other two friends would pack according to his instructions. But his friends misunderstood the fact and spread themselves over the easy - chairs. He began to pack but was so angry as both of his friends were staring at him continuously and he did not like this. It took longer than he expected but he finally packed one of the bags. Suddenly Harris asked him if he had packed the boots. Listening to this, George began to laugh and this irritated the author a lot. But, he opened the bag, put the boots in and again shut it. Then after he found that he forgot to take his toothbrush out. He began to find it and when he didn't get it, he unpacked all things and found his toothbrush inside a boot. After packing the bag again, George asked whether the soap was in or not. The author didn't care but when he found that his tobacco pouch was left inside, he again opened the bag, found the pouch and took it out. Till then it was 10:05 p.m. and many of the things were left to be packed. This time George and Harris took the job to finish the packing as it was already late. When they started packing, very soon they created chaos as they, one by one either began to break the things or destroy them. At first they broke a cup, squashed the strawberry jam, trod on the butter and smashed the pies. Moreover, they upset salt over everything and then tried to put the butter, scraped from the slipper, inside the kettle, but couldn't do that. Both of them, after some time, began to argue with each other as the butter was stuck to the back of Harris when he sat on the chair because George had put the butter down on the chair. Both of them were in trouble and suddenly the pet dog Montmorency came and sat on the things. His intention was to play with the things and he did it. He put his leg into the jam, worried the spoons and pretended the lemons as rats and finally killed three of them. Finally, at 12:50 a.m. somehow, they completed the packing of everything and then started to argue for the time to get up in the morning. They decided to get up at 6:30 a.m. because the author had to write some letters. The author and Harris placed the bathtub in front of George, so that he could tumble into it when he would get up because during the course of argument between the author and Harris, on the topic of the timing to get up in the morning, George had been sleeping very calmly avoiding their serious argument.
